My group has been studying the mechanism by which a metabolically important organelle in plants, the plastid, is developed. One of questions we are asking concerns the biosynthesis pathway of citrus carotenoids, its regulation, and the biological significance of these compounds in plants. We are taking molecular biological, biochemical, and genetic approaches to address these questions. Defining pathways by which nutritionally important compounds such as carotenoids are synthesized in plants and also their regulation mechanisms is a prerequisite for better understanding fruit and vegetable quality. My group should be able to provide knowledge and techniques to elucidate these problems.
