My research focuses on interventions to improve human health and reduce chronic disease risk factors through bioactive food components and behavior change strategies, as well as investigations to examine specific mechanisms and biologic effects of polyphenols and associated compounds. The chronic diseases on which I focus are prevention of diabetes, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease, including markers of endothelial function, lipoprotein metabolism and antioxidant defense. The overall goals of my research program are to elucidate potential mechanisms of action and provide a basis for evaluating efficacy and clinical benefits of food-derived polyphenols for human health. I bring to the center expertise in conducting nutritional investigations using a wide range of approaches from basic science to randomized clinical trials to evaluate metabolic outcomes. It is envisioned that collaborative research with colleagues within the center will yield information that can contribute to improvements in fruit and vegetable quality, food product development and the formulation of public health nutrition policies.
